Uzoma Uponi (nee Ekeleme) was born in Umuahia, Nigeria. Her native language is Igbo, and she did not begin to speak English until much later in life. “I have no idea how I passed the secondary school entrance exams!’ she would later recall. “I couldn’t even speak Pidgin English.”
But she challenged the Federal school exams after five years in elementary school and was admitted into Federal Government Girls College, Kazaure. She credits her love for reading and writing to her Literature teachers at Kazaure.
